The crowd demands a recount!

The dust has cleared from the 4th annual Chipotle Poker Challenge 2007 and for the first time, I have emerged victorious… relinquishing the tired onslet of host winning party “fixed” jokes. How’d I really do it?

Well, after a couple hours being low on chips, the big hand happened. Jeff, feeling the escalating blinds burning his feet, took a chance with suited 7,8 and went all in. Jeff’s money plus the blinds and antes looked quite appealing so I moved all in to scare others from getting Jeff’s chips. Well, Ian happy with his King, 10 called, putting himself all in as well. I had Ace, Jack suited. Would you believe the 5 community cards did not pair anyone and I won with Ace high!

That hand bolted me to 2nd highest stack, but I slowly lost my money to the low of after getting Paul out to make it to the final 2, I faced Johnny head to head - John with 10 times the chips. (Just like a lawyer, big stack, small assets). Well, I caught some lucky cards & went all in a couple times. John, hoping to catch some action and end the game called me, and in the end, I walked away with the cash.

But having been the first one out last year, John was quite happy with 2nd place, and his Full house 10’s over Aces won him the best hand prize too. Phil, the first one out, won the loser game, making him the biggest loser and a “winner” all in one night. Of course Brad is the biggest loser being stuck in some crappy far off place, while we drank and were merry.

Looking for a new sponsor, though, Chipotle did not provide any favors even for a party named in their honor.

Yes, I was the biggest loser. I wasn’t even in the far-away land during the tournament, I was stuck on a plane. Maybe Igloo Brewing Co. can be next year’s sponsor with some Michigan Sucks Blueberry Ale and Yellow Snow Lite Ale.

Unfortunately, he speaks the truth, I did have many times the chips he had. After getting to the final 5 and watching the winning hands getting smaller and smaller as the game went on, I was content many a time to face him with a simple non-face card pair. For example, once I had a pair of 6’s and he ended up beating me with a pair of 7’s.

My aggressiveness in calling sped up my demise, but since it was he continually won on only slightly better cards, I stand by my decisions. Only one lucky hand for me would have won it. It took many for him to win, odds were on my side… but … that’s poker. Literally.

I’ll take you up on the sponsorship offer.

The 5th annual Igloo Brewing Company Poker Challenge… or perhaps the 5th annual Niekamp Poker Challenge presented by the Igloo Brewing Company.
