State of the union - NFL style

Go Bengals! Boy, we are terrible.  The defense is really bad, and the offense just hasn’t been as explosive as years past.  The last game against the Jets, we were losing in the second half by two touchdowns, but we got it done.  Here’s the thing…. we play a bunch of crappy teams yet this year:  Buffalo, Arizona, St Louis, San Francisco, Cleveland, Miami.

Even as bad as the Bengals are, if they play to half of their potential they win 5 of those games.  That would move us from 2-4 to 7-5.  With a potential playoff birth at 9-7, the Bengals must win 2 of these games: Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Tennessee, Pittsburgh.

If we hope to beat Pitt, it must be this weekend at home.  Any given Sunday, right? (unless you play the Pats/Colts).  I hate to be a crazy optomist, but if the Bengals win, they’ll be one game out of first in the division, with probably the easiest schedule of any other team in the league.

This week's lesson: wrap up. Hold on after the hit, or else the ball carrier gets away.If we lose, then we can get ready to sell the farm, but if we win, we’re right back in it!

Whiney John voice: “But Curt, the Browns shouldn’t be on that list, we’re good.”  Give me a break.  Combined record of the opponents you’ve beat (6-14).  I know the Bengals lost to the Browns, and I know their record is worse, and I realize if they lose this weekend, they could end up with a worse record than the Browns, but that would just prove the Browns suck less.

The Browns will win 6 (+/- 1) game this year.  The Bengals will win 7 (+/- 3) games this year.  But for the Bengals it all rests on this next game.

Correction, Whiney John voice would actually say: The Browns SHOULD PROBABLY be on that list, our defense sucks, and our offense sucks half the time (just depends on which Derrick Anderson shows up, notice the Browns have won one, lost one, won one, lost one, won one since he took over? In each of the games they lost he sucked in the first half. He always seems to play well in the second half, though.) I’d also add Baltimore to that list, this year they are the worst 4-3 team ever, and last year they were the worst 13-3 (or whatever) team ever.

I really only see the Bengals winning at most 7 games this year. The defense is really just atrocious. And I see that if a team gets a 10 point lead early, they’ll just run the ball all day long, while continuing to score. (I foresee the same with the Browns.)

I think 6 is the lower limit for wins for the Browns. With another 4 wins a likely scenario.

Welcome back to the cellar Bengals, unless Baltimore or Pittsburgh get there, I hope its a long stay.

Could be. You would agree that the Bengals have more variables than the Browns making them more possible for the playoffs and at the same time more possible for a 4 win season.

If a couple linebackers are healthy (or play better) and the Carson/TJ/Chad show gets on track, they could be the Indy Colts of 4 years ago (when they beat teams despite giving up 35 points.)

Now, Cleveland precedent would say that the Browns should lose in the quarterfinals of the playoffs to continue the trend (Cavs lose in finals, Indians lose in Semi-finals). But we know Anderson is not consistent enough for that. He’ll be just good enough to keep Brady from playing much this year.

Agreed. Both D’s are awful. Bengals offense has proven success, and the quarterback isn’t holding the Bengals back… while the quarterback is almost solely responsible (if you exclude the horrible defense) for digging a hole too deep to recover from in the 2 losses since he took over.

I’d love it if the Browns lost in the quarterfinals, they’d have to win one the wildcard game to do that. That would make it a pretty good year to be a fan. Buckeyes - 2 national title attempts (Basketball and football), Cavs play in the championship game, Indians make it to the ALCS. I’d be extremely happy with 8-8 for the Browns.

Yeah, all the teams lost, but at least each game watched wasn’t a complete waste of time and energy like in past years.

Curt, would you care to revise your predictions?

Out of the Bengals last 5 games, 4 are really potentially winnable. Pittsburgh has proven they are incredibly beatable the last few weeks, but I’m not willing to put them in the ‘winnable’ category for the Bengals. So absolute best for the Bengals is 8-8. San Fran and Miami should be gimme’s, so an absolute worst of 6-10. It really depends on St. Louis and Cleveland as to what the Bengals final record is.

Cleveland at 7-4 is already at the upper limit of your 6 (+/- 1). Looking at the Browns final games all 5 are potentially winnable. So the absolute best is 12-4. San Fran and the Jets should be gimme’s, so an absolute worst of 9-7. Arizona, Buffalo, and Cincy are all games that can go either way. The biggest thing the Browns have going for them now is the defense is starting to show up… they still stink, but they are making the big plays when needed (they just don’t seem to be on the field when a big play isn’t needed).

And I told you that Baltimore was the worst 4-3 team ever. They have only 1 gimme (Miami), 3 no shot in hells (New England, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh), and Seattle could go either way. Welcome to the cellar Baltimore, couldn’t happen to a more deserving team. Hope you rot down there. Queers.

P.S. go Oklahoma.
