Artists that are currently tickling my fancy

The Avett Brothers
Stand Out Tracks - Die, Die, Die; The Ballad of Love and Hate; Pretend Love; Will You Return; Talk on Indolence

Definitely not country, but not quite rock. That’s the only way I can think of to describe them. It’s all acoustic with guitars and banjos. Kinda folksy, but also indie.

Vampire Weekend
Stand Out Tracks - Mansard Roof; Oxford Comma, Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa

On their debut album, they combine a couple different musical influences and make something that is completely their own. Heavy afro-pop rhythms (as in African-influenced pop, not Hip Hop) combined with an indie sensibility. Surprising sound from a group of white kids from Manhattan.

Wolf Parade
Stand Out Tracks - You Are a Runner and I am My Father’s Son; Grounds for Divorce; I’ll Believe in Anything

I think it’s the lead singer’s vocals, but this band reminds me of Modest Mouse. The musical arrangements on some of the songs are also frantic/disjointed the way a good MM song is.

Beirut
Stand Out Tracks - Nantes; Fork and Knives (La Fete); Brandenburg; Guyamas Sonora

OK, I’ll be the first to admit that this band won’t be for everybody. This music isn’t rock, it isn’t indie, it isn’t country. In fact, Amazon has this band listed under Alternative Folk, whatever that is. The music has a major Eastern European, gypsy flavor. They use tons of different instruments and it isn’t like anything you’ve heard on mainstream radio before.

Eastern European? What is that? Poland?

Gypies have music? And Doug likes it?

Has the world gone mad?
